Stop Managing, Start Leading

According to Hamza, managing millennials and knowledge workers the way we used to manage traditional factory workers can be disastrous. Speaking through his own experience of being managed and alternatively as a manager, Hamza makes the case that millennials must be lead, instead of managed and given autonomy to complete their tasks, so that they may grow and reach their full potential.
If you ask Hamza Khan about his role as a manager, he’ll tell you his approach to managing is to avoid it altogether. Before his success as an award-winning digital marketer and entrepreneur, Hamza was a student struggling to find a practical outlet for his creativity while pursuing a degree in business and political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough. In his third-year of university, Hamza switched his major and received a Bachelor of Arts to facilitate a future career in creative multimedia and storytelling. Since graduating, he has worked as a graphic designer and marketer, and teaches social media strategy at Seneca College. He is also credited with making Ryerson University Canada’s leading university in online student engagement.

Defining What is Leadership and Who is a Leader?
31-03-2021 18:00:31
31-03-2021 18:00:31
We assume that we all know who a great leader is, what leadership is, what leadership means. One of the things that I found fascinating from the 140 CEOs that I interviewed for my upcoming book, is that when I asked all of them to define leadership, they all defined it in a different way.
Would a leader of 2030 be that different than the leader of today? And if so, how?
What I uncovered from interviewing all these CEOs is that while some core things will remain the same like being able to create a vision and execute on a strategic direction, we will also need a new set of skills and mindsets. Why? Because we’re seeing things that are disrupting our organizations.
Technology, pace of change, automation, artificial intelligence, purpose, meaning and impact, transparency, authentic leadership, the very nature of talent and what it looks like, what they expect.
All these things are changing and it’s driving our organizations to need a new type of leader who can take on the challenge and guide us moving forward.

One day John's research findings gave him a shock. Children could reliably pick winners of parliamentary runoff elections only using facial appearances! More studies from politics and business helped confirm that looks could determine a leader's success. Rather than switching careers to plastic surgery, John asked: how can leaders go beyond being "faced" to connect with their audience via words and actions? John found an answer: charisma. He will show what charisma is, how it can be measured, and why it matters, from the U.S. presidency to the most frugal communication medium ever used – Twitter.
As a child John Antonakis watched his parents successfully managing their businesses, winning community leadership elections, and South Africa transitioning from apartheid to democracy. All because of leadership. John became a professor at the University of Lausanne where he carries out research on, what else? Leadership.

Leaders, Learn the Right Way to Make Mistakes

31-03-2021 18:13:44
All leaders make mistakes, says Simon Sinek, author of 'Leaders Eat Last: Why Some Teams Pull Together and Others Don’t.' In this conversation with Darren Hardy, Sinek says that what separates the good leaders from the bad is how they react after their missteps.
“If they’re a good leader I think all of them made mistakes,” Sinek says. “The question is whether they were aware of their mistakes and had any intention of building upon those mistakes, and whether they seek to learn to be students of leadership.”
Listen as Sinek shares the story of David Marquet, whose initial mistakes as a naval captain ultimately led him and his crew on to greatness.
What mistakes have you made as a leader and how did you learn from them? Let us know below!

Luis Ibanez is a senior software developer at Google. In this short talk he explains what he means by "unmanagement" and "unleadership" and how it can change the course of a project.
He says that we create the impression that leadership is what you need to get through a difficult time. But, that is misleading because the story that it does not tell is the work the community is doing. When we focus too much on the leader we diminish the work of the followers. Another problem with being in awe of the leader is that the community may be "off the hook" and may not feel responsible. You want everyone in the community to feel like an integral, important part of the team.
When things are going the preferred way, people say, "We did it!"
You can help foster this in your community or employees or teammates by not being so helpful and allowing people to pitch in.

The Essence of Authentic Leadership

31-03-2021 18:47:49
Based on 35 years of combined Marine Corps and civilian leadership experience, inquiry and study, Sean Georges has come to the inescapable conclusion that the very essence of authentic leadership is servant leadership. Servant leadership is based on timeless wisdom and human nature. It is not a style or a method. Servant leadership requires a simple and powerful perspective shift that allows each of us to lead authentically through service to others, in ways that align with and result in mission accomplishment. This talk will illustrate the fundamental perspective shift required of a servant leader, using a story surrounding a dramatic event, to enable the audience to understand and embrace this perspective. This talk will challenge you to embrace your personal responsibility to lead, as a servant, in your own life.

A combined 35 years of Marine Corps and civilian leadership experience has lead Sean to study the simple, yet powerful, perspective shift that enables each of us to lead authentically. What is Authentic Leadership?
31-03-2021 18:49:46
31-03-2021 18:49:46
As a result of leadership failures in the public and private sectors, authentic leadership is emerging in response to societal demands for genuine, trustworthy, and good leadership. Authentic leadership describes leadership that is transparent, morally grounded, and responsive to people’s needs and values. Even though authentic leadership is still in the early stages of development, the study of authentic leadership is timely and worthwhile, offering hope to people who long for true leadership.
Although there is no single accepted definition of authentic leadership, it can be conceptualized intrapersonally, developmentally, and interpersonally. The intrapersonal perspective focuses on the leader and the leader’s knowledge, self-regulation, and self-concept. The interpersonal perspective claims that authentic leadership is a collective process, created by leaders and followers together. The developmental perspective emphasizes major components of authentic leadership that develop over a lifetime and are triggered by major life events.
The practical approach to authentic leadership provides basic “how to” steps to become an authentic leader. The approach identifies five basic dimensions of authentic leadership and the corresponding behavioral characteristics individuals need to develop to become authentic leaders. In the social science literature, a theoretical approach to authentic leadership is emerging. Drawing from the fields of leadership, positive organizational scholarship, and ethics, researchers have identified four major components of authentic leadership: self-awareness, internalized moral perspective, balanced processing, and relational transparency.
In addition, researchers have found that authentic leadership is influenced by a leader’s positive psychological capacities, moral reasoning, and critical life events. In summary, authentic leadership is a new and exciting area of research, which holds a great deal of promise. As more research is conducted on authentic leadership, a clearer picture will emerge about the true nature of the process and the assumptions and principles that it encompasses.
What Is Authentic Leadership? And What Isn't It?

31-03-2021 19:02:45
In this Video Seminar, Nicholas Barnett discusses the topic of 'Why Authentic Leadership Is More Important Than Ever'.
Our community has lost faith in the leaders of our institutions because there has been a lack of alignment between what they say they stand for and some of the things their organisations do. Employees and the community are crying out for authentic leadership that can admit mistakes, say they are sorry and take substantial steps to bring about transformational change. Authentic leaders know that fundamental and lasting change on the inside is needed before it will be consistently exhibited on the outside. And that is the same for individuals and organisations alike.
In the full Video Seminar Nicholas Barnett explores 4 questions:
1. What Is Authentic Leadership? And What Isn't It?
2. Why Is Authentic Leadership More Important Than Ever?
3. Can Leaders Become More Authentic And If So, How?
4. Is Authentic Leadership Compatible With Sustainable High Performance?
